First Glühwein

It's the season for steaming Glühwein and toasted chestnuts, and it's uuhh so cozy. The first Christkindlmarkts opened today, and we stopped by the one at Altes AKH and snacked our way through brezerls, samosas, amazing Tyrollean pastry (which name I forgot) and toasted in Glühwein and hot chocolate to stay warm. You might as well make the most of it, when you're there... (And I had a carrot for dessert when we came home.)

Bliss

Day care is shut down for a week for maintenance purposes, which means I got a good excuse to put my studies on stand by for a little bit and hang out with Silja full time. So I am currently the mommy strolling through the sunshine with a coffee in hand and lots of time to stop and explore all the things that catch those little curious eyes. It's the greatest! Bjarni, who is green with envy of our vacation mode, compensated tonight by a large pitcher of Sangria. I'm sure that makes for some great research.

Saturday is Market Day

I love the markets in Vienna! Here are a few glimpses from our local Hannover Markt on a Saturday, where we stocked up on fresh produce and bought the sweet and sparkling wine Sturm (currently in season) to later enjoy with friends. Prost!

Scenes from Hannovermarkt

Greetings from an incredibly lazy Saturday afternoon in Vienna, where Bjarni is napping, and I should be working on a paper with an upcoming deadline, but keep procastinating (blogging included).. But hey it's Saturday, and we have a long weekend ahead of us, since Monday is Austrian national day (hence everything is closed). So taking it slow, should be completely fine, right?!
I went to our local farmers market in the morning. Being in one of "immigrant" neighborhoods the market has a Turkish/Eastern European flair, which is quite neat. I happened to fall into conversation with the guys at one of the stands, who insisted that I should not pay for the avocado, I wanted to buy, when they heard I was "visiting" from Denmark. "No no, let me please pay for it." "You want some bananas? Take some bananas!!". I kindly refused, but couldn't resist when they offered to pose for a picture. Nice guys.

Wiener Weinwandertag

Once a year the city of Vienna organize a day of wine tasting throughout the different vineyards in the outskirts of the city. We joined an English speaking hiking group for a 10 km (app. 6mi) walk through parts of the hilly wine districts. It turned out to be gorgeous day with lots of sun, enjoyable company and stunning views.

Kahlenberg

Weather is still sunny and warm in Vienna, but fall is definitely in the air. The mornings are colder and the trees are changing color. It's oh so pretty, and I'm excited to be back in a climate with four different seasons. Last Sunday we took our bikes and headed for the top of the Kahlenberg mountain, which is just outside of Vienna. It's was a steep but beautiful ride through the Vienna forest and the wine fields. After catching our breath and enjoying the view from the top, we turned around and made a stop on the way down again in Grenzing, where had a glass of the local Sturm, which is currently in season. Prost!
