More Global Fashion...

While watching Denmark getting beat up by Japan in the World Cup (I'm not much into football), I thought to share a couple more insights from my Fashion, life style and culture course (- which I previously did a post about here). So, these images I like because of their contrasts and because they demonstrate the interconnectedness between cultures in the tangible form of fabric, tailoring style and accessories. Cool, eh?
I'll try to provide a few details for those interested -- and I hope I got it right, as the course is in German, which is not working too well these days with this brain of mine. Anyhow, first image shows Chola women from La Paz, Bolivia. Notice the bowler hats that originates from the UK. At the time of colonization the Spanish men wore bowler hats inspired by the British. It then later became a fashion among the local Indian population, the Chola women especially.
The second image shows a Congolese man belonging to la Sape, which are men (usually of poor backgrounds) who are inspired by Parisian high fashion. They consider themselves artists who seek to demonstrate supreme elegance. Enough said, I hope you like the photos and the fashion-inspiration-going-global like I do.

World Refugee Day

We celebrated World Refugee Day this past Saturday in Bunkerei (a Biergarten/music venue) located just around the corner from us in the very lovely Augarten. I miss being involved with refugee work - something I sadly haven't touched since moving to Vienna (I tried getting involved with some volunteer projects when arriving, but that didn't pan out...). Anyways, it was great music, inspiring talks and people of all ages and skin colors going craaazy on the dance floor. Simply lovely!
On another note, I made it to Denmark and back without any issues. While it was great to be back home for a brief visit to celebrate my old grandmother turning 90 (with a heck of party!), it is equally nice coming back to Vienna where things at the moment are happening in a much slower pace.

A little bit of Boston

I went to Boston last week, and found some time to take pictures with my old phone. Despite the weather being rather boring most of the time, I was impressed by the city and it's history. It felt like a hybrid between some British town and an American city.

Summer Evenings

We went for a walk in Lichtenstein Park and along the Danube canal last night to the enjoy the beautiful weather and the smells of summer. Ahh, I love it! And thinking on my good Taiwanese friend Kiss I struck a pose. Hah. Check out that bump! I don't know what happened. When I woke up Friday it literally seemed to be double the size. I'm flying to Denmark for a brief visit next week, and even though I have another five-six weeks and a notice from my doctor that allows me to go, I'm starting to get slightly concerned if the airline will let me onboard. Bjarni is heading off to Boston for a conference the day before, so I will have to deal with them myself.
Anyhow these days are full of warm temperatures, ice creams and walks and we are thoroughly enjoying it, the evenings especially.

Der Musikverein

This afternoon was spent in der Musikverein along with my two fellow anthro-class mates Priscila and Ashley, who happened to have free tickets to a final rehearsal with the Wiener Philharmonics. I went to a concert in the Musikverein two weeks ago when my dad and grandma visited, but didn't care to drag the camera with me back then, which I regretted, when I saw how beautiful the whole place is; so lucky me who got to go again a 2nd time. The three of us celebrated having turned in a big school project. Now I just have two more papers and two exams to go before the semester ends, and I go on maternity leave and I am so counting down!
